    About the Coast Guard Auxiliary...

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed, civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard. Founded by an Act of Congress in 1939, the Auxiliary today is comprised of over 30,000 men and women nationwide who 'volunteer their time and talents assisting the Coast Guard in all missions except for military operations and "law enforcement. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is an increasingly important member of “Team Coast Guard”- the combined Active, Reserve and Auxiliary components of the Coast Guard.

The Auxiliary was founded upon four cornerstones – Vessel Examinations, "Public "Education", Operations and Fellowship. The Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary examination available to any recreational boater. This examination, performed by qualified Auxiliary members, helps boaters ensure their boats comply with Federal boating regulations. In "Public "Education, the Auxiliary provides boating"safety" "courses" for recreational boaters. The Auxiliary operates diligent 'air' and sea patrols and is an integral part of the Coast Guard "Search and Rescue team. Auxiliary members also verify aids to navigation, stand "communication" watches, assist during mobilization exercises, perform harbor and pollution patrols, and recruit for the Coast Guard. Auxiliary members also participate in Fellowship activities which promote camaraderie and a positive working relationship among members.

Pursuant to the Coast Guard "Authorization' Act of 1996, the Auxiliary has taken on a more important role, assisting the Coast Guard in performance in all functions, duties, roles, missions or operations authorized by law.

Auxiliarists are dedicated civilians who believe strongly in the Coast Guard and its missions and contribute proudly as members of Team Coast Coast Guard.
